3 Ways to Make More Money at your Garage Sale
November 2024 by couponlab
I am not a person who goes to garage sales, but I love to have them. And having them bring in more bang for my so-called junk sounds like a great idea. I love the people who live by the old “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” to me, this means getting more items out of my house that I do not use anymore. Through the years of garage sales, I have found three helpful steps to creating a more successful garage sale and ways to make more money.

GET THE WORD OUT
Use social media to let your friends know the location of your sale and also some large items that will be for sale as well. Also, ask your friends to post it as their status so that you can grab as many people as possible. There are also pages on Facebook directly for bargaining in your area, and you can post on the wall of those pages and put the information regarding your sale there. You can also post flyers on community bulletin boards; local area newspapers also have Ad space that you can buy to promote the sale.
PRICES
The general rule of thumb is 1/3 to ¼ of the original cost. Most shoppers that come to your sale will also bargain with you to get the price down or give you an offer that seems more right for them. Make sure that you will have enough change. If you have many larger items, you need to make sure that you have enough smaller bills to give the buyers—anywhere from $50 to $100 in change is a good place to start. An example is 2 $10 bills, 4 $5 bills, 25 $1 bills, a roll of quarters ($10), and $5 in nickels and dimes (only if you have items priced at less than a quarter).
ORGANIZATION
It is nice for a shopper to have items placed out like they would be at a store, so group items by gender and size. Try not to stack the items too high so shoppers can look through them easily. Place books and other small toys in bins or tubs so that children and adults can easily look through them and see what is available. Re-organize your sale periodically throughout the day. When the sale has some downtime, shuffle the clothes from the bottom to the top and make sure tables appear filled and full. Place any large items near the end of the driveway or yard so buyers will be more attracted to stop by.
These three ideas are great ways to improve your profits from one garage seller to another. I hope these ideas help you as much as they did me! And also give you a step up from the competition on those crazy city-wide garage sales! Good Luck and Happy Selling!
